THE LYMPHEDEMA: DEFINITION AND PHYSIOLOGY


Lymphedema is the accumulation of lymphatic fluid in the interstitial spaces, mainly in the subcutaneous fat following a rupture of the lymphatic system. It is a collection of abnormal tissue proteins in excess, with edema, chronic inflammation and fibrosis. The function of the lymphatic system is to drain the excess protein and water continually leaking of blood in small quantities. It also collects certain substances produced in tissues and foreign matter that enters it. The lymphatic system consists of small vessels that join with larger lymphatic vessels. The lymph fluid is pumped into these vessels by the movements of adjacent muscles and contractions of the walls of large lymphatic vessels. This active pumping is assisted by several unidirectional valves inside the vessels. Finally, the lymphatic system empties into the blood. Read the rest of this entry »
