Definition

Insomnia is the reduction of the usual duration of sleep and / or the achievement of the quality of sleep with repercussions on the quality of the day tomorrow.

During the night the amount of sleep is reduced by:

  • difficulty falling asleep,
  • nocturnal awakenings,
  • An awakening too early in the morning.

Sleep is experienced as light and unrefreshing.

Sleep disorders in Parkinson’s disease

There are frequently associated in Parkinson’s disease, sleep disorders. Two studies found that total sleep time was reduced by 75 minutes on average in patients compared with matched controls. It was also reported a lower sleep efficiency and a doubling in frequency and duration of intra-sleep awakenings. The control system of circadian rhythms that influence rhythms of sleep, does not appear damaged in Parkinson’s disease: the rhythms of temperature and melatonin secretion are normal. Sleep Disorder

Insomnia

Insomnia is defined as the state in which a person perceives their sleep as poor or unsatisfactory, in other words when the patient is unable to benefit from the rest because too little sleep or sleep badly.
Insomnia is one of dissonnie, disorders due to alterations of rhythm, quantity and quality of sleep, as sleep apnea and hypersomnia (narcolepsy).
Another group of sleep disorders is that of parasomnias, characterized by the presence of an abnormal event during sleep and unwanted, or stages of transition between wakefulness and sleep. Parasomnias are sleepwalking, the sonniloquio (speaking while sleeping), nightmares, enuresis (involuntary urination), bruxism (teeth grinding), restless leg syndrome (involuntary movements and long legs, which prevent the ‘sleep).
